Enterprise VoIPplanet reported last December on the plans of San Diego, Calif.-based Telcentris to launch a VoIP services provider in a box style platform to take the complexity out of getting into the IP communications services business.
In the intervening months, the company has been firming up the technology platform and putting an organization in place to sell and service what it anticipates will be a large and growing customer base.
“We’ve taken a pretty systematic approach to building a product, getting the policies and procedures, getting the necessary paperwork in place, and putting the staff in place for the department,” Telcentris’ vice president of business sales, Tad Nickolich told VoIPplanet.
This preparation has included bringing on a new member of the leadership team, Mark Peterson, a veteran with experience is selling white label VoIP services. “He is going to be building this division for us,” Nickolich said, “currently taking care of all the orders in process and then eventually hiring a group of people to proactively sell this more aggressively than we have so far.”
Indeed, in the time since the program was announced, Telcentris has not actively sold it. The dozen or so deals they’ve put in place have come largely from channel partners wanting to shift their role from selling Telcentris services on commission to being active providers—along with some unsolicited customers who Googled white label VoIP services on the Internet, according to Nickolich.
The first announced customer for this program is Arizona-based DataMax Wireless, a two-year-old division of Wecom, a 50-year veteran vendor of carrier services.. DataMax was initially established as an ISP, deploying 3.65GHz WiMAX technology to bring high quality Internet connectivity to residences and businesses in its rural area of some 50,000 people, according to COO Paul Fleming.
This relationship with Telcentris is not DataMax’s first foray into voice services. They did business with a couple of other providers before moving to Telcentris. “The first two partnerships did not go well,” Fleming told VoIPplanet.com.
“I would estimate that 30 to 40 percent of all customers wanted voice, but because of the poor voice quality [we were getting], we actually stopped selling voice,” he said. “Because we’re trying to build a company that gives top quality products to our consumers, we stopped selling new accounts,” while they worked to make things right.
We asked Fleming what it was about the Telcentris program that attracted DataMax. “There was a whole litany of items we were looking at, but of the main aspects that we were reviewing with close interest, one was support,” he said. Their relationships with other vendors taught them the importance of good support—which Fleming defines as 24×7 service, originating in the U.S. “They [Telcentris] are extremely knowledgeable, they’re quick to respond,” he said.
“The next thing we looked at was the combination of how did they do their major backhaul, what type of switching technology, and where their facilities are located,” he went on. “Having low latency and low jitter is very important when we’re trying to push the VoIP services over an Internet,” and these are key factors.
“After reviewing all that, we felt very comfortable with the way Telcentris had their company set up, and that’s when we began our testing,” Fleming said.
Testing consisted of actually buying Telcentris accounts, porting customer numbers over to those accounts—both business and residential—and “letting them run as true customers on the Telcentris platform.” This experience gave Fleming a real feel for how things were going to go. “We were able to test how their entire voice system worked, how the backhaul was working, how it worked with our WiMAX system. We did a full test from A to Z,” Fleming said.
“Telcentris is definitely the best voice company we’ve worked with—and we’ve reviewed a lot.”
DataMax is now in the process of switching its entire VoIP services customer base over to the Telcentris platform. “We’ve switched all of our business accounts, and about half of the residential accounts are running on the Telcentris white label platform.”
How long did this painstaking process take? “To get the entire white label program set up and go through testing, and doing some of the customizations that we wanted, took a month,” Fleming said.

To achieve successful interconnections with other carriers, it must absorb the SIP2 differences flexibly while securing connectivity with various terminals and services. Moreover, it must provide reliable, high-quality voice communications. OKI’s NX3200 meets these stringent requirements and it has been selected as a subsequent SBC to interconnect with other KDDI VoIP services network carriers.

SMBs Turning to Retail, Wholesale VoIP for Cost Savings, Survey Reports
The fear associated with the economic recession has not waned, as evidenced by a recent survey that indicated that small to medium size businesses (SMBs) are continuing to plan for future growth but are intensely aware of the need to reduce costs anywhere possible.
One such avenue to accomplish that is through retail or wholesale VoIP services.
According to a recent survey conducted by VoIP telephone and cloud communications provider 8×8 , the potential to save money is one of the main drivers for turning to VoIP services. The 8×8 survey randomly polled new 8×8 customers who subscribed to the company’s VoIP services between May 1 and Aug.19. About half of all respondents said they had switched to 8×8 from their local phone company since they were looking to reduce expenses.
When asked about the driving factors influencing SMBs decisions to implement 8×8 VoIP phone services in their business, 62 percent indicated overall cost savings while 70 percent specified features. Forty-three percent cited portability and geographic flexibility and 37 percent noted the convenience of having 8×8 host and maintain the service.
“It appears that overall economic conditions may be influencing businesses to look at alternative services such as those 8×8 offers and, in the process of doing so, they are also becoming appreciative of the inherent features and advantages that promote business agility, accessibility and growth,” 8×8 Chairman and CEO Bryan Martin said.
In related industry news, nationwide wholesale VoIP services provider Alcazar Networks spread the word this summer that there is finally a low-cost local termination option for VoIP calls, thanks to Alcazar Networks.
Alcazar Networks has expanded its resume of services to now include wholesale local termination (outbound), an offering that promises to provider carriers with substantial cost savings as customers can terminate calls locally at roughly 50 percent of standard intrastate charges. Traffic may be originated anywhere, then handed to Alcazar Networks over a SIP handoff (dedicated facility or public Internet).
Alcazar Networks first began product testing about eight months ago and is now excited about shedding light on its latest offering.
“We continue to leverage our network, and partners to make sure every product to the customer benefits their bottom line in these markets,” Alcazar Networks’ President Gavin Grabias told TMCnet in a recent interview. “We currently are only terminating to Verizon endpoints, however this will expand as our team is done analyzing the impact of terminating to other carriers in the area.”

Fixed VoIP services cleared from 911 regulations
The CRTC announced Monday it has cleared fixed or “native” voip services providers from 2005 regulations requiring them to notify customers of potential issues with their 911 services.
Nomadic VoIP services providers will be required to notify customers of service limitations that specifically affect their 911 services but not general service disruptions that necessarily impact the services.
The CRTC amended a pair of 2005 rulings on VoIP emergency service options (decisions 2005-21 and 2005-61) and noted that VoIP 911 services might be impacted by issues such as power outages or Internet disruptions.
But that it would not be appropriate to oblige voip services providers to warn customers that the problems can affect their ability to place emergency calls, the CRTC said.
Instead, the commission said nomadic providers must warn customers only if a problem is specific to its 911 service and not to its VoIP services in general.
The CRTC has now cleared fixed VoIP services providers of these responsibilities entirely.
The CRTC suggested that the move was designed to counteract an “incorrect customer perception” that VoIP 911 services are less reliable than those offered on traditional telephone services.

Hosted VoIP – Votacall Delivers Hosted VoIP Services to SIM Partners
a communications consultant. The Votacall VoIP solution will promote the organization’s rapid growth through increased flexibility, efficiency and productivity while enhancing the overall end-user experience, company officials said.
“The Votacall Platform provides us with the flexibility to grow without a large capital investment or the potential for system capacity issues,” said Tammy Rechtin, sales and marketing manager, SIM Partners, in a statement. “We like the fact that as our business expands, the actual hardware needed is not a concern. To accommodate a new hire, it is truly as simple as getting a phone shipped to us and plugging it in.”
SIM Partners creates innovative digital products and services that help businesses cost-effectively acquire and retain customers. The company was looking for a cloud communications solution to manage all aspects of communications while keeping SIM Partners ahead of the technological curve.
The Votacall VBX platform provided the company with the required communications platform that also includes end-user and solution support as well as solution upgrades for the life of the contract. The highly scalable communicationsplatform can grow, change and adapt as needed. It provides lower total cost of ownership (TCO) in the industry.
The cloud-based communications platform also delivers enterprise level functionality, reliability and ultimate redundancy with absolute investment protection guarantee. It helps in enhancing end-user communications experience with easily accessible technology.
Recently David Cargill, a council member of the Internet Telephony (News – Alert) Services Providers’ Association, said hosted VoIP services systems are not only the most cost-effective and flexible solutions out there for small and mid-size businesses (SMBs), but they also deliver optimal security.
Because hosted VoIP services requires no investment in on-site hardware or clever networking ,this enables companies to focus primarily on saving on costs and delivering efficiencies without the normal hassles of implementing communications solutions, Cargill added.

Ooma Adds Wi-Fi Option to VoIP Services
Call me old fashioned, but when I’m home or at an office, I like making and receiving phone calls from something that resembles a regular desk phone. One thing I like about desk phones is that they’re tethered to the wall with a cord, so I’m less likely to misplace them. Another thing is that you don’t have to worry about the battery running down. And, for the most part, the call quality is better on a regular old phone than on a cell phone.
Of course, there are all sorts of voip services that let you make free or cheap calls from PCs, tablets and other mobile devices, but as great as services like Sykpe and Gmail voice are, there is still a lot to be said for being able to pick up a regular phone. The trouble with regular voip phone service is that it costs a lot if you get it from one of those legacy phone companies like AT&T or Verizon. Not only do you pay a monthly service charge but — unless you have a special plan — you could wind up paying quite a bit for long distance or even when calling nearby communities.
Vonage — at about $25 a month for unlimited U.S. calling and free calls to many European countries — is a better deal than most regular phone company plans, but the cost of the service still adds up.
Ooma has a different pricing strategy. You don’t have to pay monthly fees for the basic service (you do pay some taxes) but you have to buy the equipment starting at about $250 (you can find it for less) and once you own the Ooma router, you are free to use it. Once you own the handset, all you pay are taxes, which average about $3.50 a month. Long distance calls within the U.S. are free. Overseas rates vary by country but start at two cents a minute to call landlines in many countries. Calls to cell phones overseas are higher because — in most countries outside of North America — the caller pays the “air time.”

VoIP Services Represent Strategic Questions
Some 41 percent of European consumers say they use VoIP services , almost double the rate for U.S. consumers. VoIP is big in Europe. The main reasons users are shifting to VoIP include reducing the cost of local and international toll calls as well as gaining the ability to make video calls, says
analyst Jason Armitage.
Up to this point, European VoIP services have been a bigger factor for fixed-line voice, but a migration to mobile devices now is underway, despite opposition from the wireless service providers, or at least most of them.
There are some big strategic issues here. If fixed networks cannot rely on voice revenues as part of the expected revenue stream, then today’s “triple play” revenue model becomes a “dual play” revenue model built on broadband access and video, primarily.
That isn’t to deny the future emergence of other significant revenue streams. But you’d be hard pressed to quantify those potential streams in any meaningful way, in the near to medium term.
It should be obvious that earning a financial return on a network with two key services is tougher than for a network with three anchor services. Experienced observers will be quick to note that the new triple play will consist of mobility, fixed line broadband and video. But those revenues will be earned from two separate networks, not from a single network.
That will raise the issue of how to allocate incremental capital between the two different networks. At a more tactical level, the issue is how legacy service providers can compete.
Some service providers have launched their own VoIP services, but early indications are that these services are struggling to match the take-up of consumer VoIP services. The Yankee Group believes it will be challenging for operators to differentiate their own VoIP services and achieve the scale reached by Skype, MSN and Google Talk.
In other words, users might wind up preferring some “over the top” VoIP services provider to an underlying mobile provider’s option. It doesn’t appear there is any easy answer here.
Up to this point, many service providers have restricted use of mobile VoIP services to Wi-Fi connections, or blocked mobile VoIP outright. But Armitage does not believe European service providers will be able to continue blocking over the long term. That means confronting mobile VoIP services head on.

Save Money and Get a Second Line by Making Calls Over Wi-Fi
If you frequently use a mobile phone for business calls and text messages, you know that the fees from your carrier can add up quickly. But with suitable apps and programs, you can add an office line that lets you use Wi-Fi to make voice voip services and send texts from your mobile device or desktop at no extra charge, using the Internet service you already pay for. Having a second phone line for business also can help you separate your work from your personal life.
A VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) line can be an inexpensive way to add a second phone line for business use. VoIP services enable you to make voice calls over an Internet connection. Using VoIP services , you can even transform a Wi-Fi-only device such as an iPod Touch into a phone, make cheap or free phone calls from your computer, or conserve your mobile minutes by making calls over the 3G or 4G data network or Wi-Fi connection.
The technology has improved in recent years from the early days of poor quality and annoying latency–the delay between when the other person speaks and when you hear them–to an experience comparable to a regular phone call.
Dozens of VoIP apps are available in various mobile app marketplaces, but this article focuses on the most widely used ones. Scroll down to the bottom of this article to see a comparison chart of their features.
(Note that none of these apps allow 911 emergency calling. As a result, they are suitable only as secondary lines. You should still have access to a phone line for emergency calls.

Line2 VoIP Services Finally Arrives On iPad
In July, we previewed Line2, VoIP services that was set to arrive on the iPad later that month. Despite a nearly three-month delay, the Line 2 HD app is now available in the App Store.
For $10 per month, Line2 offers unlimited calling using its iPhone/iPod touch and new iPad app. The service works with an iDevice’s built-in speaker and mic or by using a wired headset.
Best of all, the voip services are free for one-week, allowing you to make calls, listen to voice mail, and send text messages without obligation.
According to techcrunch, there are currently 50,000 paying Line2 customers. It will be interesting to see if the introduction of the Line2 app for iPad increases that number.

OBi100 VoIP Telephone Adapter and Voice Services Bridge Review
![]() |
| voip services Just when I thought I’d gotten a handle on the best deal in VOIP services , along comes Obihai with the OBI 100 VOIP telephone adapter. In conjunction with a Google Voice account, they claim unlimited calling to POTS users in the USA. Frankly, I didn’t believe it, so I received one of their devices and have been using for about two weeks. What I discovered surprised me. Firstly, it’s important to understand what the Obi is not. It is NOT a VOIP services. That you’ll have to get for yourself. What it is, is an ATA (analog telephone adapter) on steroids. The ATA allows you to connect an analog telephone to a Digital telephone system such as VOIP services provider . Features:

VoIP Services System Ooma Goes Wireless
“Cutting the cord” and getting rid of a home or small business landline telephone usually means picking a voice-over Internet VoIP solution as an alternative, as mobile phones alone often don’t provide enough reliable coverage or enough talk time to suffice. But VoIP services that let you use a traditional phone handset, like Vonage and netTALK DUO, require that you plug a device into your modem, router, or computer. The gadget has to be physically connected, limited where you can put it in your home or office. VoIP services provider Ooma, however, is going wireless. Ooma, which makes and provides service for the Ooma Telo (slideshow below), has announced a new wireless adapter called the Ooma Telo Air. The small black plastic device, which has a USB connector on a pivot joint, easily fits in the palm of your hand, measuring 3.75 by 1 by 0.5 inches (HWD). It acts as a Wi-Fi receiver when plugged into an Ooma Telo, letting you place the Telo anywhere within range of a signal. VoIP users previously had to keep their phone bases (the Telo is a kind of base) in the same location as their modem, router, or computer, but the Telo can now live in the kitchen, hallway, or any other room where you’d rather keep your phone. View Slideshow See all (6) slides More”The ability to place the Ooma Telo anywhere in the home without being tied to the office or wiring closet is one of the top requests that our customers have asked of us,” said Jim Gustke, vice president of marketing at Ooma. Another interesting fact about the Ooma Telo is that the hardware is, technically, a router, so it’s possible to use it as a bridge to connect other devices to the Internet by plugging them into the Telo—even when the Telo itself is connected via Wi-Fi. They also have the option of using the Ooma Telo as a wireless bridge for laptops and other devices throughout the home. Ooma has offered (and still does offer) other kinds of wireless options, such as cordless handset phones, but the Telo Air adapter is the first device that lets the base itself work without being wired to the Internet. In a related announcement, Ooma also will be offering a new Bluetooth service to all Ooma Telo subscribers (previously restricted to premium members), which allows mobile phones to integrate with Ooma. For example, you can configure your mobile phone to send calls to your Ooma handset when you’re home, giving you a more comfortable device for talking no matter which line you use. The Bluetooth Adapter sells for $29.99.

SNAPstart is NetSapiens' hosted deployment option, through which small and medium sized service providers can enjoy the advantages of owning NetSapiens' SNAPsolution without the capex or uncertainty associated with purchasing a solution and operating it in-house. SNAPsolution is a comprehensive VoIP service enablement platform, providing all of the necessary service delivery components required by ITSPs and other next-generation service providers.
The SNAPstart program's hallmark is its flexibility, allowing customers to purchase support and ancillary services a la carte and the ability to migrate to a facilities-based SNAPsolution as their business requirements evolve.
With the SNAPstart Certified Service Cloud Program (CSCP), NetSapiens identifies organizations with the resources and expertise to provide hosting and other support and fulfillment services, and offers certification to clients so the provider meets the Company's stringent requirements. Service providers that deploy a SNAPstart solution through a CSCP partner have the added assurance that NetSapiens stands behind them, as partners in their success.
"NetSapiens focuses on the competitive service provider and carrier space," said Jim Murphy, COO of NetSapiens. "We chose to initiate CSCP with RealLinx because they understand the space and offer complementary services such as IP network design, rack space and bandwidth, local origination and long distance termination, and Tier 1 end user support that allow SNAPstart to be a true turn-key offering."
"RealLinx is in the perfect position to leverage its vendors, systems and expertise to be able to help companies that may have significant opportunities for growth in the voice segment, but want to take a slower, more secure path to enter the market," said Gabriel Diaz, President and Founder of RealLinx, Inc.

8×8 To Swallow Contactual
Communications provider 8×8 Inc.on Monday announced an agreement to acquire Contactual, a privately-held provider of cloud-based call center and customer interaction management solutions, in an all-stock deal.
8×8 said it would issue up to 6.7 million shares of common stock to acquire Redwood City, Calif.-based Contactual.
The company also said it would offer Contactual’s call-center solutions to its channel partners as part of 8×8’s recently launched channel program that gives partners the option to resell a broad range of cloud-based services, including VoIP services , conferencing, video and cloud computing.
“Today, many of our largest customers are already subscribing to hosted call center services utilizing the Contactual platform, and we are seeing increased demand for these services from our large, channel-originated prospective customers,” 8×8 Chairman and CEO Bryan Martin said in a statement.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based 8×8, which has been reselling Contactual’s call center technologies over the last four years, expects the acquisition to close before the end of the month.
The deal is just 8×8’s latest acquisition. Earlier this summer, 8×8 acquired Zerigo Inc., a Littleton, Colo.-based company providing virtual private servers, managed DNS servers and monitoring tools for cloud-based server operations.

How to: Choosing the right VoIP provider
VoIP’s main claim to fame is the remarkable amount of money a small or medium-sized-business can save on its communications bills. So what is the right provider for you?
VoIP services have been around of a number of years and is hugely popular amongst the technically minded, but it is only in the last year or two that it is seeing far more widespread adoption at the business and enterprise level.
For a reasonably small outlay of cash, individual users can get good quality VoIP services through a number of providers that have sprung up over the last few years, the most popular being the likes of Engin, Faktorel, Mynetfone and Pennytel. These providers have also branched out into the SMB space, and some of the larger providers, such as Internode, Telstra and iiNet, are now offering enterprise- level VoIP services.
So why go with VoIP now? The main reason is, of course, cost. Most providers offer far cheaper local and international calls than fixed line telephone providers, and in a lot of cases minimal hardware is required – just a VoIP-enabled gateway device and away you go. Issues still remain with call quality for larger businesses looking at multiple lines, but this problem is slowly being ironed out with services such as the Australian-designed Voxalot, which offers increased features to current VoIP users at a low cost, as well as SIP trunking. SIP trunking can be used as an ISDN primary rate replacement for outgoing calls, allowing you to use whichever carrier you like.
For small business looking to get into VoIP, the business case is clear, according to Internode’s product manager, Jim Kellett. “It’s pretty much cost,” he says. “It can take a huge chunk out of a medium or small business’ communication bill, which is largely phone and mobile. Internet is only a small proportion of most companies’ bills. The ability to have free calls between branches and timed calls will save a bucket of money.”
Kellett says cost is the initial attraction of VoIP services , but over the last year or so it has started to move up the food chain to do things that weren’t previously possible for a small business.
“For instance, running everyone’s extensions off the one PBX rather than having discrete landlines scattered around the countryside,” he says. “That degree of consolidation and allowing people to communicate with each other within the network can be a lot more friendly than doing it over a traditional system. You can’t get much more cost effective.”
For medium-sized-business and even at the enterprise level, very cost effective packages are available. Internode’s NodePhone Business Trunks is an SIP trunking service specifically designed for business users, offering up to 100-number in dial and with the ability to connect several IP PBXs and support direct extension dialling and multiple concurrent calls.
Internode recommends that larger business looking to use trunking services also consult a good systems integrator who specialises in the different IP PBX systems such as Cisco, Asterisk and Mitel.
iiNet is also working at the enterprise level, offering a SIP trunking solution that lets you choose the best balance of concurrently available lines. For its Multiline package, iiNet charges $9.95 for up to two lines, $7.95 for each line after that up to 10 lines, and will design a package for users requiring more than 10 lines. Prices for calls are similar to most of the other VoIP providers – 15c untimed calls locally and nationally, 29c per minute to mobiles, charged per 30 second block, and international calls for 5c per minute.
There are some cheaper deals out there – the popular Engin ePPX package for small to medium-sized-businesses charges a monthly fee of $9.50 per user, with local calls charged at 10c untimed, mobile calls at 17c per minute and international calls from 1.9c per minute.
However, depending on the average length or the number of calls made, a differential system might be more cost effective. Mynetphone charges a higher monthly fee – $60 per month for two lines with unlimited users – but includes 250 local or national calls and then charges 10c untimed above that.
One of the main problems with VoIP is that it is entirely dependent on the quality of your broadband connection. When voice traffic is high, data traffic can be delayed. “On a good day you can’t really notice the difference but on a bad day you might notice the difference in quality,” Internode’s Kellett says. Like Internode, some providers who own their own network are able to “groom” traffic to ensure disruption is minimised.
Converting to VoIP services makes a great deal of sense for small businesses particularly if they are moving into new premises. In addition to traditional PBXs not being required, many providers can offer a free 1300 number, PSTN porting and pretty much all offer Quality of Service (QoS). Most are now bundling their VoIP products with their broadband offering.
If you are undecided about which provider to use – and some of the most popular, like Freshtel, have had major problems recently – then some of the best advice is to make a test call using their service to confirm the quality is good, or ask them to provide a testimonial. The good news for small business owners is that you can try out a number of different VoIP services and choose the best one for you.

VoIP Services - Choosing the Right VoIP Services
One important step into adopting voip is to choose VoIP services, which will allow you to make and receive cheap or free local and international phone calls. It is important to choose the right type of VoIP services. Your needs and the way you will communicate should help you decide which type of VoIP services to choose. The list below shows the existing types of VoIP services, and helps you decide which type suits you best.
Computer-Based VoIP Services
Computer-based or software-based VoIP services are the most common among VoIP users. This type of VoIP services can be used for free in most cases, especially when they involve PC-to-PC communication over the Internet. You only have to download a VoIP application (called a softphone) that the VoIP services provides and install it on your machine, register for a free account, and talk. The calls are unlimited and free when you talk to people using the same VoIP services on their computers. Calls to mobile and landline phones are charged, but cheap. A headset is the minimal hardware required. Read more on computer-based VoIP services.
